Post Bylaws Template
"Thank you" to those Post Leaders who reviewed the Post Bylaws draft
template and contributed their comments. The SAME Board of Direction officially adopted the new template for rollout to the
Posts during its meeting in May. Posts will now need to adopt new bylaws using this template found in the
Post Operations section of the SAME Web site. Members will need their IDs to access
the template.
The Post Bylaws should cover all governance issues for the Post to ensure continuity from one year to the next. The Web site
provides information on the revision process and a summary of changes in the new template. The deadline for submission of the
new Post Bylaws to SAME HQ is May 31, 2005. The receipt of these new Post Bylaws will be included in the criteria for
Distinguished Post and Distinguished Region for the 2005 Streamer Awards.
Summary of Bylaw Key Points
- Eliminated need for a Constitution at the Post level
- Added an article on governance, which brings the Post under the National Constitution and Bylaws
- Included a Past Post President on the Board of Directors to provide for continuity between Presidents
- Provided for a Post to have Appointed Directors in addition to Elected Directors
- Suggested Standing Committees align with the Strategic Plan and Streamers
- Provided for organizing both Mission and Operations Committees consistent with National level
- Established May/June as the desired transition for officers
- Updated article on communications to include Web sites

2005 Directory Deadline Sept. 30
The deadline to submit a Corporate Profile for the 2005 Directory of Member Companies and Public Agencies (print version),
or to update or add office listings to a current profile, is Sept. 30, 2004.
New this year! Public Agencies can add an expanded Agency Profile noting areas of responsibilities, contracts awarded,
and the like. To be listed in the Directory, companies and public agencies must be current members of SAME. Memberships
not current as of Sept. 30, 2004, will not appear in the print version of the Directory.

One copy of the 2005 Directory of Member Companies and Public Agencies will be mailed to each Sustaining Member and
Public Agency representative in January 2005. This publication is a powerful and valuable business development tool

Enhance your Profile and Office Listings with your
company logo.The fee to place your logo on your Profile page in the 2005 Directory of Member Companies and Public Agencies
(print version) is $400. You can place your logo on your Office Listings for only $25 each listing. Offices are listed state by
state in the 2005 Directory. As an added bonus, you receive a free color logo on your Profile page in our online
Directory when you place your logo in the print version. To submit your logo, go to your Profile on the SAME Web site and
follow the directions. Your free online logo will appear on your company's Profile page on the Web.

Children's Book Available
Those Amazing Engineers from Trilogy Publications is now available in limited quantities to Posts that want to
provide outreach to elementary schools. Geared to students in grades 3-6, it has interesting and useful information on
the engineering profession. SAME National and the New Jersey Post are recognized in the credits for their support,
along with some of our Sustaining Member companies. To order copies, e-mail John Hagaman at

up to 10 copies per Post.
Request for Technical Session Proposals
The deadline to submit a proposal to present a technical session at the
SAME 2005 National Education & Training Conference and Expo in Louisville, Ky., is Aug. 31, 2004. There will be
approximately 20 45-minute technical sessions offered.
The general topic areas are:
- Sustainable Design or Environmental Sustainability
- Infrastructure Risk, Reliability & Rehabilitation (with emphasis on inland waterways and military facilities)
- Emerging Technologies
- Quality Operating Systems (i.e. APIC, ISO, others)
- Innovative Contracting Tools
- Other topics suggested by SAME Members
Due to the limited number of technical sessions and the awarding of PDHs, presentation quality and
subject matter will be taken into consideration by the SAME National Conference Program Committee. Those selected to present
a technical session will get name recognition in the conference program.

New Small Business Sustaining Membership Category
SAME now offers a new Sustaining Membership category for small businesses. As a Small Business
Sustaining Member, those firms, companies and consultants with 10 or less employees can now enjoy the benefits of being
Sustaining Members at an affordable rate. As a Small Business Sustaining Member: You must be a small business that
employs 10 or fewer employees (company size and not office size).
- You enjoy reduced dues of $200 initial membership (includes one Post) with the option to add Posts for just $100 each.
- You select three Sustaining Member representatives; one of which must be a Young Member.

Membership Renewals
Effective Jan. 1, 2005, Individual Members (excluding students) will be invoiced on an annual billing cycle that runs
Jan. 1 through Dec. 31.This is a change from the anniversary cycle used previously.
Effective Jan. 1, 2005:
- All membership cycles will run Jan. 1 to Dec. 31
- New members who join after Jan. 31 will be prorated for the year.
Need to renew your membership? Individual Members can easily renew their SAME membership online
at www.same.org/renew. Select the membership that is right for you and complete the form.
Want to add another post to your membership? Individual Members can add additional Posts to their
membership by visiting www.same.org/addpost and completing the information online.
Membership Tip:
Set up a Buddy Program.
Remember summer camp, when the new kids were paired up with the veteran campers who showed them
the ropes? New members can be a little skittish, or even shy about attending their first event. Ask for volunteers within
your Post to orient new members at meetings, or other social events and serve as a tour guide. Many great friendships have
been made this way.
SAME Logo Development: Call For Comments
SAME is in the process of developing a logo for the Society that capitalizes on the acronym SAME.
The logo is intended to build pride in the SAME name and help present a clear identification for the Society. The logo would
not replace the Society seal.The intent is to use the logo on merchandise and other Society marketing efforts.
Several logo options are available on the SAME Web site at
www.same.org/logo, for review and comment. We are looking for
feedback from you, our members, on the look, direction and overall effect of a SAME logo. The deadline to provide comments
is Sept. 12, 2004.Your feedback will be tallied and the results will be presented to the Executive Committee at
its September meeting.The SAME HQ staff will use the comments to further develop a logo for SAME that builds pride
and ownership for all. Please take a moment to participate in this important effort. Go to
