SAME Focus on Membership Yields Positive Results
Happy New Year!
2005 was a super year… Congratulations! We are off to an even better year in 2006 for SAME members and Posts. I hope that SAME will
continue to be an integral part of your personal and professional development, and we will do our best to continue to deliver value and satisfy your needs and concerns.
I had the personal pleasure of attending the holiday luncheon at Century House and was very impressed with the energy of the Headquarters team. They are looking forward to serving you. Please give them a call. . .they will impress you.
The SAME Board of Direction has been keenly focusing on our Posts’ membership recruitment efforts. Through the outstanding leadership of our RVPs and Posts, 48 Posts added new Individual and Sustaining Members—and won the Membership Streamer! This far exceeded 2004 results, in which 28 Posts were awarded the Membership Streamer. Congratulations and well done to all of our 2005 winners! (Click Here for the list of Membership Streamer winners [PDF Document])
In addition to the Membership Streamers, we recognize the Posts with the largest membership growth for 2005 with a check for $250. Congratulations and BRAVO ZULU to each of the following Posts!
Most Individual Membership Growth
- Small Post—West Point-Stewart Post (25)
- Medium Post—Narragansett Bay Post (32)
- Large Post—Fort Worth Post (77)
Most Sustaining Member and Public Agency Growth
- Small Post—Tularosa Basin Post and Carolina Midlands Post (4 each)
- Medium Post—Bragg-Pope-Fayetteville Post (10)
- Large Post—Northern Virginia Post (15)
I would like to also commend our
recruiters—those individuals who worked
passionately to bring new members into our SAME family.
The top recruiters for 2005 are:
- Most Individual Members—Jimmy Baggett, Fort Worth Post (54)
- Most Student Members—Brad Wambeke, West Point-Stewart Post (72)
- Most Sustaining Member Companies and Public Agencies—Miki Andersen, Pikes Peak Post (3)
All of these superstars and Posts will be recognized at the Post Awards and Leadership
Transition Breakfast Meeting in New Orleans, La., on June 1, 2006, as part of the SAME Joint Engineer Education and Training Conference & Expo.
I’d also like to congratulate three SAME members who were recently recognized by Engineering News Record (ENR) for being selected as one of the “Top 25 Newsmakers for 2005”: Maj. Gen. Charles E. Williams, F.SAME, USA (Ret.), for his outstanding management of the Department of State embassy construction program; Brig. Gen. Pat Burns, F.SAME, USAF (Ret.), for his success in managing a large, complex military construction program; and Col. Duane Gapinski, Commander, USACE-Rock Island District, for his leadership of the New Orleans Unwatering Task Force following hurricane Katrina. These individuals will be recognized at the Annual ENR Top 25 Awards Dinner in New York City on April 6.
The SAME Board of Direction continues its laser focus on “increasing the relevance, diversity and public sector participation in the Society through inspired leadership at the Post, Regional and National levels.” The Board recently approved a restructuring of Life Memberships that reduces dues for members serving in the public sector. The reduced rate also is available for individuals who have retired from one of the uniformed services—either as a uniformed officer or civilian employee. Our hope is that those who are serving or who have served careers in our “military engineering” profession will want to maintain their membership in SAME throughout their public service careers, their follow-on private sector careers and into retirement.
Please mark your calendar for the Engineering Service Chiefs and Federal Program Briefings and the Academy of Fellows Golden Eagle Awards Dinner in March. The Engineering Service Chiefs look forward to presenting their FY07 programs to SAME Sustaining Members on March 17. This year’s event will take place at the Crystal Gateway Marriott Hotel in Arlington, Va., the same location as the Academy of Fellows Golden Eagle Awards Dinner, which will be held on March 18, and is open to all SAME members. We particularly invite our SAME Fellows to attend—it’s your premier event. We are proud this year to present Golden Eagle Awards to: Adm. James M. Loy, USCG (Ret.), former Commandant of the Coast Guard and Deputy Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, for significant contributions to national security; and Maj. Gen. Charles Williams, F.SAME, USA (Ret.), Director of Overseas Building Operations, Department of State, for significant contributions to the engineering profession. I applaud the Academy on their selection of these outstanding individuals. We look forward to seeing you on March 18, and at the many SAME conferences and Post activities scheduled throughout 2006.
