MATHCOUNTS National Competition
More than 220 students from 50 states and U.S. territories, and State Department and DOD schools, competed
in the May 5-7 MATHCOUNTS National Competition in Detroit. SAME is proud to be a supporter of MATHCOUNTS,
a national competition that promotes middle school mathematics achievement with competitions for
individuals and teams. SAME support has included: volunteering for MATHCOUNTS as a criterion for a Post award
and encouraging “Adopt-a-School” programs by Sustaining Members to increase school participation; sponsoring
or hosting a MATHCOUNTS competition, a MATHCOUNTS Recognition Day or coaching workshops; and encouraging
submittal of articles involving SAME participation for possible use in MATHCOUNTS publications and SAME News.
Your Post members can make a difference by volunteering for future events as a coordinator, coach, co-coach,
competition volunteer (local, state and national levels) or special event volunteer. For more information, go to

SAME Partnership With Learning For Life
In 2004, the SAME K-12 Education Committee, www.same.org/k12, worked hand-in-hand with the Learning for Life
(LFL) organization, forming a partnership that led to SAME providing an opportunity for two LFL participants
to attend the SAME-sponsored engineering and construction camps. The two students that attended the SAME camps
had attended the LFL engineering academy held at Marshall University. Gina Denjen attended the SAME/Seabees camp
at Port Hueneme, Calif., and Erica Boles attended the SAME/USAFA camp at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado
Springs, Colo. The two prospective engineering students reported having an outstanding experience at each camp.
Cliff Takawana, Associate Director of Learning for Life who worked with the Education Committee stated, “I
believe the camps proved to be a great experience for the kids, and we are grateful that SAME provided us with
this fantastic opportunity. We at Learning for Life believe this will help us to continue to build the long,
mutually beneficial relationship SAME and Learning for Life have been developing.”
Special thanks to K-12 Education Committee members Larry Myers, ACOE-Kansas City District; Ron Brown,
Sundt Construction; and John Novak and Mike Haverty, J.E. Dunn Construction, for helping to build the partnership
between the two organizations.
SAME has extended an invitation to LFL for an additional spot at each camp for 2005. The success of this alliance
undoubtedly will lead to future opportunities for Learning for Life and SAME to team together, bettering the
future of the engineering community by providing leadership training to our youth. (John Novak and Mike Haverty,
